THE STORY BEHIND OUR APPROACH

From a crisis on Lesvos to a method that works.

We start by changing staff. Then a few residents change. Then the whole place.

OUR STORY

Ten Years On The Ground

2016

Choas in Greece

10,000 people a day, the peak of the Syrian crisis, every system overwhelmed.

We decide to ask help from refugees themselves.

A method is born

Doing things with people instead of for them.
We call it:

Camp to CampUs

The MOTG Academy

A a method reception teams across Europe now use.

Practical tools to train caregivers to step back so residents can step up.

WHAT WE DISCOVERED ALONG THE WAY

We can build systems of care that work with human nature.

People behave the way we treat them.

When we treat people as someone “in need” or “beneficiaries” they internalise that message over time and start to behave like that.

People commit to what they help create.

Every time we decide for somebody, we take some of their power away: our best intentions create the conditions for low accountability.

People follow people, not rules.

The relationship between residents (Peer pressure) is the most powerful tool to solve problems and keep them solved.

RESIDENTS

“It feels good to be part of something [where] I feel like I am helping others. Being able to make a difference in people’s lives is a normal part of life, I feel like I'm becoming myself again.”

Ali M. (Sudan)

STAFF

“I am proud to see refugees support each other, they are happier and I feel I'm using my expertise more effectively. At first, it felt a bit scary to ask them do things, but now I see how sharing responsibilities makes everthing easier in the end”

Farah R. (Netherlands)

HOW IT WORKS

A guided 12-month implementation
Programme.

1

Activation Day

One day to align minds and objectives with the team on location.

2

4

Return Day(s)

One to two follow-up on location to support with a specific milestone.

THE METHOD

Gradual, Safe and deeply Rewarding.

1

Start with

AWARENESS

Resident Accountability is created or prevented by staff, teams need to understand how.

2

Improve

COLLABORATION

Shifting Interactions with residents to act as partners solving problems together.

3

Structure

ONE TEAM

Residents are gradually handed over responsabilites by staff.

We know shelter from the inside.

Our approach is practical and apolitical.

They have trusted us:

If we don't involve people

in managing their own recovery and integration, we build systems that don't work.
